Some highlights: Chinatown visit to a $ store that was like the Secret Garden--just seemed to grow as you walk inside. I think if the item wasn't there, it isn't needed. I was looking for a hand-held pencil sharpener and asked the owner where to find it. He led me to it and later when I went to pay, he asked me if I was the one who wanted the pencil sharpener and wasn't that about a half hour ago. I told him that there was so much to look at, it took me awhile. He said that was good as the more you look the more you spend. A food market was almost overwhelming--so much food and so many bargain hunters. A sample of non-verbal communication: I wanted to buy some tiny bowls and when I got to the checkout, the cashier looked at me asking the price. I shrugged and indicated I had no idea. She charged me 50 cents and away I went. Also, ugly shaped sweet peppers were 39 cents and nicer ones were 59 cents.
We visited the Fika Cafe--fika means take a break. The walls were papered with paperback novels opened and screwed to the wall. This was in the Kensington market area. The musical "The Heart of Robin Hood" was excellent--reminded us of Spamalot. Very clever and very funny. We also saw "Potted Potter" which was really terrible. It didn't really hang together and was quite foolish. The bonus of this trip was as we were passing the Eaton Centre, we encountered the "No Pants Subway Ride". They were shouting What do we want? Answer: No Pants. When do we want it? Answer: Now. Funny to see all the people with no pants. This is an event that has been happening for more than a decade. Check it out on U-tube.
I had a blood test here and was reminded of how fortunate we are to have a great Health Care system. Once I found the "Dragon City Mall", it was no problem and the results were emailed to me the next day. Pretty good. It was a very cold morning and I had to walk a few blocks and was glad to get back home and to bed to warm up with my warm husband.
We spend a day in Mississauga with friends from Winnipeg. The GO bus took us to Square One shopping centre which was across from the cinema where we saw movies and then had dinner at Scaddabush an Italian restaurant which was great. We had a wonderful visit and a great day. We also went to Burlington on the GO Train, drove to Niagara Falls with friends and then had a lovely dinner together. Niagara Falls with frosty mist and lights is quite a sight. We came back to TO in time to go to a TIFF production which was Naomi Klein and her husband. They were discussing her latest book and his doc related to it. I didn't feel too hopeful for the environment or the economy after.
The AGO is at the end of our street so we went one evening and lucked out in getting a volunteer who was happy to show us the highlights. We will go back this week to look more. What a wonderful place!! There is a collection of Ken Thomson who liked small things. There were many ivory prayer books which were craved so beautifully and some prayer beads made from boxwood. We enjoyed the paintings by William Kurelek and many others. It was impressive that so many others were at the gallery.
We spend a delightful afternoon at the CN Tower. It is a wonder. We saw a video of people
walking on the edge--frightening! I still can’t walk on the glass floor. Meanwhile there were young people jumping on it. We had lunch there. We saw a couple movies: “The Imitation Game” which was great and “Interstellar” which we didn't like as well but Grant thought was great. So there you go. On our last night we went to a performance called “Boom” which cover the Boomer years 1945 to 69. The fellow who performed was amazing--he did many voices and sang many songs--had the sound of Janis Joplin.
We left Toronto by train on Friday, January 16. Ottawa here we come.
